Dyer’s Polypore
A large, rugged polypore that grows at the base of conifers or from their roots. Its caps are irregular and velvety, with concentric bands of yellow, orange, brown, and green as it ages, often resembling a rosette. The underside has small pores instead of gills.
This fungus causes a butt rot in trees, weakening them over time. Though inedible, it is prized by fiber artists for producing rich natural dyes in golden, green, and brown tones.
