Woodland White Violet
Found on the moist, shady floor of rich woodlands, the Woodland White Violet is a delicate harbinger of spring. From a low cluster of heart-shaped leaves, it sends up slender, nodding stems, each holding a single, pure white flower.
Look closely, and you'll see its lower petals are delicately penciled with fine purple lines that act as nectar guides for early pollinators. Later in the season, it produces a second set of hidden, self-pollinating flowers at its base, guaranteeing seed production. This humble plant often spreads into gentle carpets and serves as a vital host for the caterpillars of fritillary butterflies.
