A striking fall and winter mushroom recognized by its lavender to violet cap and gills when young, fading to brownish with age. The cap is smooth, often with a slightly rolled edge, and the gills remain crowded and lilac-colored before dulling. It grows on leaf litter, compost, and decaying plant matter, often in clusters. The stem is fibrous and shares the same purplish hue as the cap when fresh.
